Terra-icons (Sergei Zakharov, 2016)

Installation. Metal rods with small objects, reconstructed room with a projection.

The installation is a construction made of metal rods topped with miscellaneous attributes of daily life in Donetsk before the war – football symbols, fast food, mass consumption products.

The second part of the installation is a reconstructed room in Donetsk where windows open into the past, on a pre-war recording from a webcam.

The artist shows the process of destruction of a pre-war lifestyle, the vanishing of the markers that used to exist in the background and were taken for granted, like going to a football match or eating out at the McDonalds, but disappeared under occupation thus becoming symbols of freedom and democracy.
