Occupation (Andrii Dostliev, 2015)

Collage. Series of 31 pcs. Dimensions variable.

In spring 2014 Russian military assisted by local collaborationists have occupied a part of the Eastern Ukraine, including the largest city of the region – Donetsk. The occupied territory immediately became a dangerous place for any pro-Ukrainian individual.

I’ve been to Donetsk, my hometown, for the last time in January 2014. I could never expect then that this visit would be my last one.

My family photo archive still remains there in my flat. I might never see it again. It might not exist anymore when I’m writing this text or when you will be reading it. Attempts to retrieve it may produce unnecessary risks for those who would be assisting me. All I can do to preserve my family’s visual history is to reconstruct at least those photos which I still remember. Reconstruct using any available materials and photos of other people no longer needed by their previous owners. Occupy somebody else’s memorabilia exactly the same way my own were occupied.
